August Birthstones

August 3, 2012

I am sure everyone is aware that each month is associated with a particular gem or birthstone, but I bet you didn’t know that August has two: sardonyx and peridot. Sardonyx was worn by the ancient Greeks and Romans who carried it as talismans into battle, to bring courage and victory. It is recognized by its layers in red, brown and white.

The more customary birthstone is peridot. It is formed deep within the Earth and is brought to the surface by volcanoes. As a result, it has come to symbolize the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. Peridot is commonly mistaken for emeralds because the gem shines so brightly. Ancient Egyptian miners would search for the gem at night since it would shine without sunlight. Peridot is also a symbol of strength, healing and is said to protect its wearer from night terrors.

Although we don’t have these gems in stock, be sure to check out the African Blue Collection. The beads are detailed with evil eyes, which help protect its wearer!
